Gamaliel von Tavel

Gamaliel von Tavel Vocal studies

Gamaliel von Tavel received his most important musical impulses from Elisabeth Glauser in his hometown of Bern and from Kammersänger Jan-Hendrik Rootering in Munich. Von Tavel, who now lives in Berlin, has sung at the theater in Wittenberg, the Theater der Stadt Heidelberg, the "Kleine Szene" of the Sächsische Staatsoper in Dresden, the Oper Neukölln in Berlin, and the Staatstheater in Darmstadt. Mozart roles such as Papageno, Masetto, and Figaro are part of his repertoire, as well as Humperdinck's Father in "Hänsel und Gretel". He has also sung premieres, such as Ferrando in Hans Zender's "Don Quichote de la Mancha". The "War Requiem" by Benjamin Britten, the German Requiem by Brahms (both performed at the Herkulessaal in Munich), the title role in "Christus" by Franz Liszt (in the Wieskirche), as well as all the major bass parts of Bach's oratorios are the highlights of his concert repertoire. Von Tavel has sung with the Reutlinger Philharmoniker, the Prague Symphony Orchestra, the Capella Istropolitana, the Neue Hofkapelle Munich, and the Bavarian State Orchestra. German Lied is his great passion, with a self-directed "Winterreise" by Franz Schubert, as well as the "Dichterliebe" by Robert Schumann at the center.

In addition, von Tavel always realizes projects in which he increasingly appears as a composer in addition to his singing activities. For example, in "Heimat?", a song cycle by composer Reinhard Febel with Bernese German and German texts by his great-granduncle Rudolf von Tavel was premiered, and compositions by Gamaliel von Tavel, interpreted by pianist Ya-ou Xie, were also premiered in this program.

In the latest project titled "An Clara", which celebrates Clara Schumann's 200th birthday, a premiere titled "16 Miniatures as a Homage to Dichterliebe" by Gamaliel von Tavel as a composer, and a contemporary work by Christian Henking, in which a letter from Robert to Clara Schumann was set to music, are the focus. For this project, von Tavel has engaged internationally renowned artists, namely Friederike Harmsen (mezzo-soprano) and Sebastian Noack (baritone). And pianist Ya-ou Xie, with whom von Tavel has been collaborating for years, will accompany the program on the piano.
