Michael Hasel

Prof. Michael Hasel Flute

He already played piano, organ, and harpsichord, but wanted to learn another wind instrument. The discussion was between the flute or the horn. His grandmother, the "sponsor" of his musical activities, put a flute under the Christmas tree for her grandson - because she was more familiar with the sound of the flute. So Michael Hasel became a student of Herbert Grimm and Willi Schmidt, and later - during his studies at the Freiburg University of Music - of Aurèle Nicolet. There he also continued his studies in conducting and piano playing. His first engagement led him in 1982 as a solo piccolo player to the Radio Symphony Orchestra Frankfurt, and only two years later he became a member of the Berlin Philharmonic. In addition, Michael Hasel was a solo flutist for many years with the orchestra of the Bayreuth Festival.

In 1988, he founded the Philharmonic Wind Quintet with four colleagues, with whom he has performed worldwide and recorded numerous CDs.

In addition, Michael Hasel is also active as a teacher and conductor: from 1994 to 1998, he was a professor of wind ensemble and chamber music at the Mannheim University of Music. He also teaches at the Orchestra Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic and at international master classes. As a conductor, he has worked with renowned ensembles and orchestras, including the Ensemble Modern, the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, the Scharoun Ensemble, the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, the Gustav Mahler Orchestra, and the Orquesta Simón Bolívar in Europe, South America, and Japan.
