Prof. Elisabeth Werres Vocal studies


Soprano Elisabeth Werres has been a professor of vocal studies at the University of the Arts Berlin (UdK) since 2003. She was born in Bonn, Germany, and raised bilingually in Chicago, USA. She began her vocal studies at the age of 19 with Professor Dietger Jacob at the State University of Music in Cologne.

After starting her career at the Cologne Opera Studio, she moved on to the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe and then to the Theater Dortmund. In her first four years in the profession, she performed in 14 different roles, including Rosina, Adele, Constanze, Zdenka, Frau Fluth, Susanna, Eurydice (Offenbach), Musetta, Ännchen, Susanna, Adina, Nedda, Marie (The Bartered Bride), and Margarethe (Faust), in over 300 performances. During this time, she also won the support prizes of the Federation of German Industries, the Wagner Association, and the Mozart Competition in Würzburg.

She subsequently appeared on television, made radio recordings, and transferred to the Lower Saxony State Theater in Hanover, where she was a long-standing member of the company. Her concert repertoire ranges from Bach to Weill, in addition to countless lieder and a CD recording of Paul Hindemith's comic opera "Neues vom Tage" conducted by Jan Latham-König.

Concerts and guest appearances have taken her to theaters such as the Cologne Opera, Hamburg State Opera, Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Bavarian State Opera, Zurich Opera, Komische Oper Berlin, Leipzig Opera, Aalto Theater Essen, National Theater Mannheim, National Theater Weimar, Erfurt Theater, Gärtnerplatz State Theater, Wiesbaden State Theater, as well as to Austria, Luxembourg, Spain, Japan, France, Romania, the Netherlands, Hong Kong, Switzerland, and the United States.

Over the years, her voice has developed from the lyrical and coloratura fields to roles such as Elvira (Don Giovanni), Countess (The Marriage of Figaro), The Merry Widow, Freia (Das Rheingold), Arabella, Tatiana (Eugene Onegin), and later Sieglinde (Die Walküre), Turandot (Busoni), Tosca (Puccini), Elena (The Sicilian Vespers), Marie (Wozzeck), Milada (Dalibor), Chrysothemis (Elektra), as well as the roles of Rosalinde and the Marschallin, which have become some of her favorites.

Her repertoire now includes over 55 different roles, not including oratorio and lieder. Prof. Werres also regularly gives master classes in Germany and abroad.
