Shengnan Hu Percussion


Shengnan Hu grew up in Xuzhou, China, in a family of musicians. She started taking piano lessons at the age of four, and added percussion lessons at the age of ten. From 1996 to 2002, she was a young student in percussion at "The Middle School" in cooperation with the "Central Conservatory of Music" in Beijing.

In 2002, Shengnan Hu continued her education in a bachelor's degree program with Professors Gerald Fromme and Ulrike Stadler at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, and graduated with distinction in 2006. In the same year, she was awarded the scholarship "The highest scholarship of Austria." In 2011, she completed her concert exam as a student of the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin with Professors Li Biao, Rainer Seegers, and Franz Schindlbeck - also with distinction. From 2011 to 2013, she was a master student of Peter Sadlo at the Mozarteum Salzburg. In 2009, Hu received the NaFöG scholarship from the University of the Arts Berlin.

In 2007, Shengnan Hu won the 1st prize at the Bertold-Hummel-Competition Munich in percussion, the 2nd prize at the International Competition for Percussion Instruments (Bulgaria), and the award for the best timpani solo performance. In 2008, she performed as a percussion soloist at the closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympics.

Since the winter semester of 2018/2019, Shengnan Hu has been teaching as a guest professor at the Xinghai Conservatory of Music China. Concert tours and guest lectures have taken her throughout Europe, Asia, and the USA.


Shengnan Hu has appeared as a soloist with many orchestras including the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin, Konzerthaus-Orchester Berlin, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, China National Orchestra, China Philharmonic, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, Neubrandenburger Philharmonie, Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester Frankfurt, European-Chinese Festival Orchestra, Deutsche Kammerorchester Berlin, and Plovdiv Philharmonic Orchestra. She has also performed as a soloist at prestigious festivals such as Kissinger Sommer, Young Euro Classic Festival Berlin, Kasseler Musiktage, Beijing Music Festival, Beijing Modern Music Festival, Shanghai Spring International Music Festival and has worked with prominent conductors such as Tan Dun, Muhai Tang, Lan Shui, Long Yu, Gilbert Varga, and Johannes Wildner. Her work has been documented through numerous radio and television productions (ORF/Ö1/RBB/CCTV) as well as CD recordings.
